I just graduated with my Creative Writing MFA from the Northeast Ohio Masters of Fine Arts Program at Youngstown State University. I focused in fiction, with a secondary focus in Creative Nonfiction. GPA: 4.0 I was a Creative Writing Major at Knox College in Galesburg, IL. I also focused on fiction there, with a secondary focus in Poetry. I minored in Art History. GPA: 3.6 I got my High School Diploma from St. John's Preparatory School in Collegeville, MN.
Experience
I would love to work with any age, for any of the following: >Reading tutor >Essay Writing tutor >Creative Writing tutor one-on-one >Creative Writing groups--I'd run anything from a small, casual writing group up to a more formal workshop (Price differences for groups--just ask, and we will work it out!) I taught a small creative writing group with half a dozen 8th graders and one 6th grader back in Youngstown, OH, which went very well. Everyone had fun and markedly improved their writing skills. We did writing exercises each week, trying out all kinds of stories. We also discussed writing theory: what are the different parts of a story and how do they all work together. I also assigned them short weekly readings, which we talked over each week: what worked and why, what didn't work and why, how did the author use setting/dialog/humor/etc? It was a blast. I taught Freshman Composition: Writing 1 courses for five semesters at Youngstown State University. I made my own syllabus and designed my own assignments. So I have a ton of experience explaining how to structure paragraphs and essays, how to approach picking out a topic, how to make outlines, how to edit a rough draft until its a polished final, and how to read carefully and critically. I interned in a Beginning Creative Writing class at Youngstown State University where I functioned as an assistant to the professor. I read every student's work and write them detailed critiques that explained what they did well and what they could change to improve their stories. My thesis project for my MFA degree was a Dark Children's Novel, which is currently in the hands of a prominent literary agent.
