Hello! My name is Sean and I am currently a Senior Research Chemist in research and development at 3M in Saint Paul, MN. I recently moved to Saint Paul from Boston, MA where I was a Chemistry Postdoctoral Associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. I obtained my Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Nebraska in 2012 and my B.A. from Simpson College in 2007 (Indianola, IA, Magna Cum Laude). Throughout my training, I have received significant experience in group and individual tutoring, leading class lectures (from 15 to >200 students), and leading laboratory and recitation sections. While I enjoy solving scientific problems in a laboratory setting at work, I maintain my passion for teaching through tutoring students how to effectively understand and solve problems. During my undergraduate studies I was a student athlete, requiring me to balance difficult classes with a strenuous training schedule. This experience taught me the importance of effective and efficient studying techniques, which I utilize during my tutoring sessions ensuring I help my students based on their mode of learning. Additionally, I broadened my teaching experience outside of science as a Teaching Assistant for a philosophy course. This strengthened my ability to communicate and provided perspective on assisting students who do not respond to the objective approach taken by most science teachers. I have remained active in small-group and individual tutoring and teaching in General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Physics throughout my graduate and postdoctoral career.
