Private tutor in Minneapolis, MN

Education

BA in Spanish, International Business & Management, St. Cloud State University, 1994 Universidad de San Jose, Costa Rica. Study-abroad program.

Experience

I love the Spanish language and have been teaching private and group Spanish classes for 13 yrs. I love to see "the click" when a student grasps a new concept/idea/vocabulary. While memorization is a big part of learning a language (which many students find tedious and boring), I work hard to make classes engaging and use games, memorization "tricks", music/songs/videos & technology to reinforce what needs to be learned. No one wants to sit and stare at a book or a teacher or a piece of paper. I encourage learning through conversation and want my students to know that making mistakes is appropriate and to be expected. My goal is for my students to enjoy learning Spanish and become independent & confident life-long language learners. I was also a Founding Board Member of Lakes International Language Academy (LILA) in Forest Lake, MN. I have been very involved in the school as a Board Member, PTO Member and volunteer.

Hobbies

I love to traveling and have been to many different US states and world countries (Costa Rica is my favorite so far!). I enjoy outdoor activities including down-hill skiing, biking, hiking, swimming, canoeing & camping. I also like to crochet and sew and love to volunteer and do mission-related work. I have two children (14 & 16 yrs old) who attended the Spanish Immersion Charter School in Forest Lake. They are continuing to learn Spanish and my daughter is also in her second year of French. We have encouraged them to pursue a second (and third) language because it will open so many doors for them in their adult lives. Wonderful examples of what every student can pursue with encouragement! One of my favorite quotes: ❝One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.❞ ‒Frank Smith
