Experience

I have worked as a tutor, in a variety of settings, for over ten years. My background includes providing tutoring services to families across the Twin Cities in several school districts; working as mentor-tutor at the University of Minnesota University of Minnesota in their student-athlete academic center; working as a tutor, teacher and counselor at a high school in Minneapolis; and volunteering as an ESL tutor at a high school in Minneapolis. I work with students in ALL subject areas and help them stay organized, assist them in understanding their assignments and deadlines, work with them to develop basic study skills, and provide support during their often hectic schedules. My subject strengths include Writing, English, Spanish, Geography, Humanities, and Social Science courses, but am capable of assisting in any subject area. I have also tutored at the high school level and middle school level, and have done private tutoring for several years. My focus in every tutor session is for the student to walk away with something they did not have when they arrived, whether it be a completed assignment, a better understanding of their schedule and upcoming assignments, a perfected grammatical rule, or a deeper understanding of difficult course material. I strive to teach my students how to teach themselves; that is, I don't advocate for giving students all the answers, I advocate for students to learn how to find the answers on their own, and serve as a supportive guide, providing resources and academic insights, as they become stronger learners. I completed my Bachelor's degree in 2008 and graduated with a 3.75 GPA. The course focus was on international studies of culture and people in Europe, and I took a variety of geography, history, and humanities courses, many of which were writing intensive. I also took several language courses, including Norwegian, Spanish, and Modern Greek and feel most comfortable tutoring students in Spanish. I recently completed my Masters Degree in Higher Education, finishing with a 4.0 GPA. The coursework was varied and included theory, case studies, analysis of various texts, organizational leadership, and best practices in the field. I would be more than happy to share more detailed descriptions upon request! I have a very strong work ethic and pride myself in setting and achieving various challenging academic goals and expect my students to do the same. I have truly enjoyed meeting every single student I've worked with and make it a priority to ensure students are better prepared for future courses, develop excellent writing habits and skills, have a deeper appreciation for analyzing relevant texts, and learn how to connect their current studies with their future professional opportunities. I value the relationships I have been able to build with my students, as well as the unique and individualized talents they each have. I believe all students can be successful, academically, professionally, and socially, if they work hard, believe in their strengths, acknowledge their weaknesses, maintain a good attitude, and have fun! School would be boring if we didn't add a little humor sometimes!

Hobbies

I currently live in Woodbury with my husband and 2 pets. I am extremely outgoing, friendly, compassionate, hard-working, and energetic and try to incorporate all of these traits during my tutor sessions with students. I am very active - I am at the gym almost everyday and enjoy tennis, basketball, and volleyball when the weather is great! My husband and I travel whenever we get the chance and love exploring new places. I also love food and the extensive dining options the Twin Cities has to offer and am always up for trying something new! I am an open-minded and positive person and my students all know that I care about their success just as much as my own. If you have any additional questions, please ask!
